ABCs of Zoning

Setbacks

Zoning determines the distance between a building or structure and property lines or from other buildings. Setbacks are usually less in urban areas to encourage walking and outdoor dining and to reinforce urban character. Suburban and rural setbacks are often large to provide for front yards and safe distances from higher speed roads.

Roads

Roads provide connections to and within communities. In suburban and urban areas, the best roads are multimodal, providing safe connections for autos, transit, pedestrians, and bicyclists alike. Rural roads are less formalized and usually accommodate cars and bicycles.
